A dashboard camera or simply dashcam, is an onboard camera that continuously records the view through a vehicle's front windscreen and sometimes rear or other windows if additional cameras are fitted.

Dashcams fall into two categories non-connected (stand-alone without on-board sim) and connected (those with a sim enabling live recording/viewing/notifications). They can both record HD video and have a G-Sensor which records harsh braking or acceleration. Non-connected dashcams require the user to remove the SD card and download their footage in order to review it. Connected dashcams, with 3G/4G SIM enable the user to receive instant notifications with incident video clips attached and connect to a cloud platform which automatically stores any footage of driving incidents and GPS location data, vehicle speed, and accurate time/date. They can automatically notify multiple parties including your insurer and can help to increase the speed of claim resolution.

A dashcam can help you to prove who is at fault if an incident occurs and some insurers will offer a discount if one is fitted to a vehicle.
